The Cabin In The Woods is a parody without being a parody of the basic, typical Slasher movies. It gives Friday the 13th feels while also getting inspiration from Evil Dead a little bit. It has the basic, typical Slasher characters; in fact, as they state in the movie “the slut”, the “jock”, “fool” (stoner), “scholar”, and the “virgin”, and in Slasher movie instances, the virgin is also known as the “final girl”. However, it is also different from the typical Slasher style movie and tropes.
The friends go to a cabin in the woods, that happens to be the “scholar”, Curt’s cousin’s cabin, but the cabin and lakesite happens to be a machine controlled by the government, needing to perform a certain kind of ritual. What is the ritual though? In the middle of the movie, the cellar door flings itself open while the friends are playing truth or dare. Dona, the “virgin” gets dared to go down there where they see a bunch of different scary, eerie things. She sees a book, opens it and reads the Latin, repeating it multiple times. What happens next? That’s when the fun really begins! The Cabin In The Woods brings and merges bloody good horror with comedy tossed in at the right moments!
Review: I originally saw The Cabin In The Woods when it was initially released in 2012. It wasn’t at all what I thought it was and for that reason, I hated it! Fast forward close to 15 years, it being 2026, I rewatched it for the first time and I loved it! It happened to be absolutely awesome, brutal, and hilarious! It really plays into the typical Slasher tropes without being typical. 5/5 stars!
