Scream is a 1996 Horror film that is also a parody of other Slasher films. People consider it the movie that saved Horror and changed it forever by establishing “the rules”, as well as making the characters more aware of horror cliches, and discussing the rules openly with surviving a real life horror movie. The film changed “the game” in other ways too, with rather than making the most famous person the “final girl” and the last one to be killed, and or survive, but making the most famous person die at the end; in fact, with this, it made one of the least biggest stars the “final girl” and changed how people saw the “red herring” as well as the whodunit aspect of Slashers.
It was released in 1996 with director Wes Craven, starring Neve Campbell as Sidney Prescott “final girl”, Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis, Matthew Lillard as Stu Macher, David Arquette as Dewie Riley, Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers, Jamie Kennedy as Randy Meeks, Drew Barrymore as Casey Becker, and Rose McGowan as Tatum Riley.
The film is about a masked ghostface killer killing off teens in the little town of Woodsboro, with the killer targeting Sidney Prescott for reasons that have to do with her mothers murder the year prior. Bodies are counting and no suspects, which makes police have to have a curfew and shut down town. Later that night, Stu Macher throws a huge party to celebrate, but little does everyone else know, the real party and bloodbath is about to begin.
Scream spawned a franchise of 7 films, with Neve Campbell and David Arquette starring in all of them except for the sixth one. However, Courtney Cox has been in all seven films. There was also an MTV series that ran for two seasons, was cancelled for a short time due to low ratings, until it was picked back up for a season 3, but was cancelled once again for low ratings. The show, however, was set completely separate from the films, and only featured the films Ghostface mask in season 3.
Review: I LOVE the Scream franchise, with the original being one of my all time favorites and seeing the 4th one in theaters as my first R rated movie and Horror movie in theaters. Some of the films are better than others, but overall, they are all great in their own way! The original Scream changed Horror forever and it's because of that movie why we have some of the great Horror movies and Slashers today! 5/5 stars! As for a rating for thw show, I'd give the first two seasons a solid 5/5 stars, but for season three, I don't have much of a review.
